Top Tips For Transitioning to Natural Shampoo

When it comes to caring for curly hair, going natural is best. Unfortunately, many shampoos contain damaging ingredients that can strip hair and harm the planet. One solution to this is transitioning to natural hair products. The delicate and natural formulas include natural shampoo ingredients that your hair will love without any hidden side effects.

So, how should you swap to natural shampoo ? Here are some top tips to help you along your natural haircare journey.

Is there a transition period?

If you want to give your hair an overhaul, there is no reason why you shouldn’t begin transitioning to natural hair products as soon as your old shampoo is finished. However, if you’ve been using chemical-based shampoos for years then your hair will go through a transition once you switch.

It may take a few washes for your scalp to adjust to the new formula and the natural shampoo ingredients begin to work their magic! You may, for example, experience a waxy or oily residue after cleansing your scalp which could last a couple of months or just a few washes.

How to get used to natural shampoo ingredients

Starting your journey with natural haircare can transform your curls from dull to divine. But, like all new products it’s about trial and error to find the right one for you.

Here are some top tips that you can do while transitioning to natural shampoo for curly hair or any hair.

  • Stay persistent - As you train your hair into a new routine, it’s going to take some time getting used to. It’s important to stick with it and before long your hair will adapt to the natural shampoo ingredients.
  • Use the shampoo sparingly - When using natural shampoo for curly hair, don’t go overboard with how much you apply especially if your hair is feeling waxy. Instead, start with a small amount and invest in a soft shampoo brush to gently massage your scalp. You can always add a little more shampoo if necessary.
  • Find a natural shampoo for your hair type - Just like standard shampoos, not all natural shampoos are going to work for you. Take your time and find a product that is formulated for your hair type and needs, this way the transition will be easier.
  • Add water and work in the shampoo - Because 100% natural shampoo bars do not contain SLS or other synthetic foaming agents, it can take longer to build up the lather. Try rubbing in between your hands then applying it to your hair and use lots of water to really work the shampoo to your scalp and lengths of your hair.
  • Try this clarifying recipe - to help the transition, it is important to help your hair find balance. You can use baking soda for a deep cleanse:

- 1 part baking soda and 3 parts cool or lukewarm water. (Steer clear of warm or hot water, which will make the baking soda clump up.) If you have shoulder-length hair, use 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda and 6 to 9 tablespoons water. If you have shorter or longer hair, adjust the ingredients accordingly. Mix the ingredients in a small bowl until they form a thick paste.

- Apply the shampoo on wet hair, starting at the scalp and ending at the tips. The mixture will feel gritty and "goopy," which is totally normal. It also won't lather or foam like traditional shampoo because it doesn't contain any soap. Work the mixture into your scalp, but don't scrub too hard. The rough texture of baking soda can cause irritation if you're not gentle. Let it sit for 1 to 3 minutes , then rinse out the shampoo with warm water.

- Be sure to finish with an apple cider vinegar rinse. 1 part of apple cider vinegar for 5 parts of water. Like baking soda, apple cider vinegar may irritate some skin types. Don't overdo the rinse, and only use it when you need a clarifying treatment.
